Wildlife Photography – Improving Your Animal Instincts!

We cover useful and practical easy to apply tips on improving your existing knowledge of outdoor natural and wildlife photography skills in this special feature on click and shoot creatures for you so stick around and enhance your sharp shooter skills right here right now! After all who knows when the travel bug may bite you next and you find yourself in the middle of an adventure holiday destination with all the scope of putting together wildlife calendars postcard materials and even the odd tshirt print but for the want of matching photography techniques to capture the beauty of these wild beasts!

So to avoid the disappointment of such a frustrating experience and to increase your scope for gameviewing and photography of a wild untamed and thrilling outdoorsy moment made more memorable for the exciting natural backdrop it can be captured in take a look at these exclusive wildlife photography tips and you can bet your next camping trip won’t be the same again what with so many types of photographs to click!!

There is no dearth of the type of outdoor photography you can aspire to choosing to do when out in the wilds: the range of natural wildlife photography covers the varied purposes of professional photographers and even hobby photographers keen to commit to film and memory their tryst with the wild side of nature e.g. animals in their natural habitat. Some of the types of wildlife photography you can explore when out in the wilds includes portraits or headshots of animals closeups or zoom focus of profiles landscape and series photography sort of like slow motion shots very interesting especially when you can capture one of the Big 5 moving in for the kill.

The greatest virtue that one needs to develop for perfecting the skills of outdoor especially wildlife photography is patience; close on the heels of this is the need to work on using various kinds of photography equipment e.g. light support tripods lens change etc. while atop a tree/vantage point and also keep a cool head.

A very challenging and exciting vocation to choose wildlife photography is fraught with dangers of being in the naked outdoors with little more than a camera to shoot great moments and also risk being exposed to tropical diseases or unfriendly weather conditions if traveling beyond known territories of one’s homeland.

You will need to learn how to use a telephoto lens as many a time an animal will not walk near you and in the beginner stages a wildlife photographer needs to learn to be comfortable in natural surroundings and not simply be foolhardy in approaching an animal straight off as this gesture may be misinterpreted as a threat and the animal may attack you.

A good way to start on wildlife photography career is to begin with the more accessible animals like bears fox elk wild rabbits etc. while keeping a safe distance as you don’t want to scare them away and yet capture them in their natural habitat.

Try using a high speed digital camera so you can assess and store the best shots including the agility of an animal in the wild as well as not miss out on any actions since digicams come equipped with various easyuse features like autofocus redeye elimination and extra zoom etc. and their quick shutter speed helps one to take multiple shots as the animal in focus moves.

Learn techniques like panning following the territory of the animal’s range of movement outdoor lighting and placement of photography equipment so you can get close and take personal shots of the animals without drawing attention to yourself and always respect jungle laws to stay safe in the wilds.

Wild Animals That Have Adopted Me

Wild Animals That Have Adopted Me

Part of moving to a new home is adapting yourself to the local flora and fauna especially if you’re going a long distance away from your last residence. It’s actually a special kind of culture shock because the natives will be happy to give you directions around town and set you up with the postal and garbage schedules but everybody neglects to tell you how to deal with your first crocodile or moose encounter.

The desert was fun for us. In the States we moved to a quiet little town in Arizona. We hardly had an issue. There was the occasional scorpion or tarantula that found its way into our mobile home but nothing else major. Lucky I had better sense than to try to catch a roadrunner. I saw plenty of other folks who were only too happy to make a fool of themselves this way and I can attest that roadrunners have a sense of humor and deliberately run around in circles to make you dizzy.

But when I moved to the midwestern plains of Iowa that was a different story. The area is positively teeming with life and we have a pretty rural area so anything and everything is at least coming up to our porch and likely as not coming right inside.

Probably the most disturbing was the centipede which dishearteningly is called a ‘house centipede’. Yes this huge icky brown thing with long legs sticking out all over actually prefers your basement. Forget anything you’ve seen in cartoons; a house centipede looks just like the baby facehugger monster from the original ‘Alien’ movie the one that attacked Kane. They move that fast too. When you encounter your first house centipede you will likely be sitting there stewing at 2AM when you catch something horrible darting like lightening across the wall out of the corner of your eye just enough to make you wonder if you imagined it. But fast and nasty enough that your first immediate instinct is “Kill it now! Before it gets to the children!

And then you discover that these things are very good at getting away from you. After a couple hours of ransacking the basement I gave up and forgot about it. But it didn’t forget about me. It waited apparently tracking my movements for two days until I came downstairs one morning coffee cup in hand just waking up and then it launched itself from the ceiling rafters onto my increasinglybalding head. Twothousandths of an ounce of enraged anthropoid attempted to devour me alive but found my skull too hard to bite through so he dodged under my shirt instead while I simultaneously scalded myself with hot coffee shattered my mug screamed like a girl and slapped myself everywhere. I got it but I had a red bump from its bite for a souvenir which lasted two weeks. Encounter enough house centipedes and you’ll be keeping nightwatch in your basement with a flamethrower.

And then there was the bat discovered in the yard as an apparently dead brown lump of fur. I went for the snow shovel to scoop it up and toss it figuring it for some random woodland creature who was the halffinished meal of a stray cat. I got within one foot of it when it popped out two leathery wings and raised its head to hiss at me with a mouthful of fangs. Immediately I was ten feet away but watching it and wondering why it didn’t take off.

After it became apparent that it wasn’t going to I realized that it had become my problem; if anybody wanted to use this yard again the bat would have to go. So I crept up on it and it repeated its act and this time it flipped itself over on the ground and I beheld two silver wriggling blobs on it’s belly. As if I wasn’t grossed out enough already! It turns out as I retreated to the indoors and Wikipedia that those were baby bats. It was a mommy. And bats… I still shudder with horror to think of it… lactate so the babies stay attached to the mother and nurse its little batty nipples and drink its milk. We stayed inside. The next day the family of three was gone. And everybody I mention this to says “Good thing you didn’t kill it those bats are endangered.” Yeah and if it comes back to my yard clicking its shiny white rabid fangs at me it can expect to be endangered a whole lot more. When is the government going to recognize my endangered status?

Most everything else we’ve met in Iowa isn’t as confrontational. Just about anything that hops climbs or tunnels has fur and four legs and is smaller than a dog has happened by. Opossums rabbits chipmunks skunks moles mice and squirrels. It’s the squirrels that are more unnerving because of their intelligence. That FOX cartoon “Pinky and the Brain” has it all wrong mice wouldn’t take over the world. Squirrels will as soon as the time is right.

Got a bird feeder? Then you have squirrels. Put it up on a pole? They’ll climb it. Suspend it from a wire? They’ll slide to it. Put it out in the open? They’ll jump up to it. Surround it with booby traps and clever devices? They’ll outwit every one of them. We’ve been having a literal battle of wits with the squirrels at last prompting me to get a contraption sold from the hardware store in which the bird feeder dangles from a twine which is attached to a hooked pole and the feeder has a motor in it so that it spins faster and faster whenever anything heavier than a robin settles on it.

It was on the morning when I looked out the window to discover three squirrels working as a commando team to defeat the trap and get the seeds that I realized that squirrels will one day rule the world. One had his hind legs wrapped around the pole while he held the bird feeder steady with his front paws. A second was at the feeder furiously digging the seed out. A third was on the ground catching all he could. The little red hooligans finished emptying the feeder and divided the pile on the ground up and scampered away back to the tree where I assume they would be watching the World Series on a stolen TV and washing down their lunch with the sixpack of beer that’s disappeared out of the neighbor’s cooler.

Just be ready to adapt when the time comes OK? Squirrels will rule the world. When they do I hope that they can at least save us from the other creatures

Where To Enjoy Maui Whale Watching

Where To Enjoy Maui Whale Watching

During the winter months Humpback whales love the warm waters of Maui. Each year anywhere from 1500 to 3000 whales make the 3000 mile trek from the frigid waters of Alaska to the wonderful waters of Hawaii.

From midDecember through April or May you can see them frolicking just off the coast slapping their flukes spouting and leaping out of the water. There is no doubt Humpback whales are impressive to see. At around 45 feet long they can weigh up to 40 tons.

In 1997 some of the waters around the Hawaiian Islands were designated as the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary the countrys only singlespecies federal sanctuary.

Where to enjoy whale watching in Maui

If you want to experience Maui whale watching for yourself you generally need only to gaze out at the ocean from shore to witness the beauty and grace of these amazing marine mammals. You will find that whale watching in Maui takes very little effort during the winter months.

There is no one time of the day that is best for whale watching in Maui but they do tend to appear most often when the surface of the ocean is glassy and the tradewinds are calm. For those who want to get out on the water there are many Maui whale watching options available by boat. From large tours to intimate sailing excursions you can get a frontrow seat for whale watching along with some other friends such as the funloving Hawaiian spinner dolphin. Some visitors are even brave enough to venture out in kayaks and rafts to view these enormous creatures up close.

To experience Maui whale watching from solid footing there are many points around the island that are particularly well known for their whale watching vistas. Try visiting one of these and dont forget your binoculars.

McGregor Point

On the way to Lahaina just before the tunnel is a great place to enjoy whale watching in Maui. Find a safe place to pull over around mile marker 9 for a great vantage point.

Outrigger Wailea Resort

As a public service the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary has installed a public telescope at the resort along the Wailea coastal walk. Stop here and enjoy Maui whale watching on the south shore.

Olowalu Reef

On the Honoapiilani Highway between McGregor Point and Olowalu you can enjoy Maui whale watching. From this area you can see the whales leaping out of the water as they frolic. Be careful though traffic can come to a screeching halt as excited whale watchers abandon their cars in the road and run to the waters edge. If you stop here please take a moment to pull your car out of traffic.

Puu Olai

A vantage point on top of the cinder cone overlooking Makena Beach this tough climb offers the best vantage point for shoreside Maui whale watching. You can see them dodge Molokini Crater and enjoy the waters of the Alalakeiki Channel between Maui and Khoolawe.

If you are staying in one of the many resorts along Kaanapali Beach you may even be able to just relax on your balcony and witness the majesty of these amazing sea creatures.

Wherever you decide to go whale watching in Maui you will not be disappointed by their grand splendor and majestic grace.

What You Need To Know About Alternative Therapies For Dogs

What You Need To Know About Alternative Therapies For Dogs

Many of us these days like to supplement our traditional medication with alternative therapies. It seems that for every medication you read about there is some horrible side effect that is possible and some of us have been unfortunate enough to suffer from some of these side effects so it is only natural for us to look for alternatives to filling our bodies with yet more chemicals. Many people enjoy a great deal of success with these alternative therapies and it seems to be rare for someone not to be able to find at least one that helps them to some degree. But what of mans best friend? If we are going the extra mile to ensure our own natural good health shouldnt we be doing the same for our dogs? Thankfully there are a whole host of alternative therapies available for dogs these days some of them quite surprising! In fact it seems for every alternative therapy for humans there is one for canines.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture as a discipline is as we all now thousands of years old and originates from China. Needles finger pressure and heat sources are used to restore the bodys natural energy balance. It is said to help dogs with arthritis allergies organ conditions and for other pain relief. Many claim significant pain relief from acupuncture although quite how they get the dog to sit still through that kind of thing is beyond me. You know how a dog seems to know when its going to the vets? Imagine a repeat visit to the acupuncture clinic!

Chiropractic

This involves the manipulation of the spine to restore normal condition and function to the spinal column and surrounding tissues. Can be effective for arthritis and other pain disorders.

Herbology

The use of herbal treatments is a popular and effective treatment for many conditions including skin conditions parasites arthritis and pain relief.

Homeopathy

A branch of alternative medicine which believes a conditions symptoms are part of the bodys defence mechanism and that therefore tiny quantities of substances that produce similar symptoms can relieve them . In simple terms that like cures like. My father always told me to fight fire with fire thats probably why he got kicked out of the fire brigade. A popular remedy for car sickness arthritis ear and bowel problems.

Magnotherapy

Similar to the popular magnetic bracelets used by people magnetic collars for dogs can relieve suffering and pain. A correctly aligned series of strong magnetic fields replicates the pulsing of electromagnetic machines used for pain relief in hospitals and is popular for its low maintenance as well as its low evasiveness. This is believed to work through a restoration of the bodys natural ph through affecting the electromagnetic processes between cells. An effective remedy for arthritis circulation problems and general pain relief. Massage Can be practiced at home without the danger of side effects it is also a good way of bonding with your dog. Can help with recovery from injury mobility and circulation. As with alternative remedies for people it is worth trying a few to see what works for you and your dog. Never attempt to diagnose and treat conditions yourself but consult a qualified practitioner. Hopefully you can soon have a healthier happier dog in a natural way and a happier dog means a happier you!

Understanding Your Dog

Understanding Your Dog

To be a responsible dog owner you have to understand how important your role is in developing your dog’s character. Yes all dogs come with different characters and temperaments but it is your reaction to his/her actions that mould the finished product that is the character and temperament. You only have to watch the many recent television programs to see how badly behaved some dogs get and all because the owners have either ignored the signals that the dog is giving out or the owners react to the dogs actions in the wrong way that make the dog think that it has done the correct thing so of course it does it again and again always going unchecked so in a very short time it becomes an unwanted or bad habit. Bad habits or behaviour are always far more difficult to solve but rarely impossible if you know what you are doing than they are to stop them being created in the first place.

That is the first and most important lesson to be learnt by any dog owner new or seasoned that the most important time in a dogs life is in the early stages. When you first bring that puppy home do not make the mistake of ever thinking that it is too young to learn. Yes you may have to let the puppy settle in with you before issuing too many rules usually about 24 hours but do not make a rod for your own back try and think “what do you want the dog to be like when it is fully grown” because what ever you allow the puppy to do now it will continue to do all its life until you check it. If you do not want the dog to sleep in your bedroom as a fully grown dog then do not have it there as a puppy.

If you are to succeed in being the Alfa dog in your household then your bedroom should be your
“den” and your dog should respect your private place and know that it does not go there ever! You will never have good control of your dog if it does not respect you as the “Alfa” dog in its pack. You may have to suffer a few lost hours of sleep if it has been left in the kitchen by itself but it is rarely a problem for long. Make sure the puppy has plenty of toys to play with food and water in a container that it cannot lift or turnover can also help but something which is most helpful is leaving the radio on all the time for them. Silence is hard for them to cope with it can also help to stop them barking at noises from outside and being spooked by things that go bump in the night. You know yourself how noisy silence can be especially at night. Also remove everything that is within reach that you do not want to be chewed once again prevention is better than cure. If all chewable items are out of reach and the puppy has a nice tasty bone to chew on chewing should not become a serious problem.

So you have got through the first night puppy should now be feeling more its self now as they do not tend to greave for their lost litter mates and Mum for very long. Now this is the time when the time you spend with your new puppy really is most important. Keep it confined to a fairly small area so it is easier for you to keep an eye on. If you watch puppy very closely you will notice a change in its actions just before it is about to relieve itself it will walk around in circles sniffing the ground this is when you quickly but gently scoop it up and take it out to the garden to spend a penny or tupence if it dose not immediately relieve itself keep telling it to “hurry up ” or something of your choice until it performs then make a really big fuss of it and even give a treat. You will need to have treats handy either in your pockets or in a bag by the door you use so that you can just crab one as you are going out with puppy. Any treat you are offering to a dog or puppy to impress on them that they are good must be given within a matter of seconds for the dog or puppy to connect its deed with the receiving of the treat therefore encouraging it to do the same again in the hope of receiving another treat.

Like wise any reprimand for bad actions also need to be issued within seconds for them to be effective. On a note of reprimands; as a young puppy no telling off should be issued at all an absolute no ! Only when you know they have fully understood what they should do should you begin to introduce mild reprimands to enforce your treats for the good behaviour. How much your particular dog needs to be corrected really dose depend on its own character. A very gentle character who quickly learns and wants to please you will probably need no reprimand at all yet a strong character which is going to try and be boss will need telling off when he/she dose something wrong or it will think its ok to do what he/ she wants to do.

Personally my last dog a German Shepard never had even a verbal telling off because she was so gentle she just wanted to please but her replacement is a very different matter she is also a German Shepherd but given her own way in the wrong hands would be an unruly dog. As so many Shepherds have the misfortune to suffer because they get bought by people who do not understand them.

A mistake that a lot of owners make is not realising just how expert dogs of all ages are at understanding body language. They are experts from the day one! They instinctively understand all movements you make even when you do not realise that you have even hardly moved. If he/she was waiting for your next move and was paying attention to you the very slightest lean forward will be seen and recognized by your dog that you are about to get up from your chair when all you are really doing is moving to get comfortable. But if you really where about to get up your dog would sense it instantly. This is why they always know when you are about to either take them for a walk go on holiday or go to bed or anything else you do regularly simply because you will go through the same motions each time any of these actions are about to happen .

The biggest reason for problems developing is boredom. The more intelligent that your dog is the quicker he/she will get bored this is why you have to become very creative to keep your dog not only entertained but to give to give him/her plenty to think about. Entertainment for the brain will tire a young dog out much more than physical exercise. When young you need to apply just the right amount of exercise to keep your dog fit without over doing it. Too much exercise for a young dog can be very damaging to the growing frame. Much better to play games that the dog has to really think about not only is it good for them but it is also excellent for building your relationship with them.

Dog training needs to be fun do it properly and you will learn how to stop bad habits forming or how to eradicate unwanted behaviours that already exist. You will learn the practical value of all obedience exercises how to develop good habits for yourself and your dog which will lead to a harmonious relationship.

About the writer:nbsp;nbsp;I have had dogs for 42 years. Learning how to train them from my mother who trained to county level. Over the years I have found that the old ways of training are not always the best.I have found that praise is the best form of training and the younger the dog the easier it is to train.

Treating Your Dog Allergy

Treating Your Dog Allergy

Did you know that living with an indoor dog can actually help a child to be safer from allergies? There is a chemical that dogs release called endotoxin that actually helps the immune system to develop which is beneficial for children. Usually those that have a dog allergy have developed this sensitivity by being in contact with a dog after their immune system has already developed. While dogs may be man’s best friend a dog allergy can be very difficult for anyone to live with if they love their pet. What can a person do in order to treat this sensitivity other than send their pet away?

For one thing remember that the chemical that causes a dog allergy usually comes from their saliva and not their skin. This is unlike a cat allergy which is usually triggered by cat hair and dander. A dog’s saliva contains albumin which causes an allergic reaction in many. So obviously the first thing you need to do when you have a dog allergy is keep the dog from licking your hands and face! When the dog licks themselves this sticky protein is deposited on the hair along with dead skin cells. When the dog hair comes into contact with dust clothing curtains furniture or you the protein will stick to the surface of the object. After playing or wrestling with your dog this saliva can trigger an allergic reaction that lasts for hours.

It also helps to make sure the dog is outside as much as possible. When the dog is indoors he will spread the allergen all around the house that much more causing the reaction of your dog allergy. It can also help to remove the carpeting in your house in as many rooms as possible; opt for hardwood floors in various rooms. The less carpet you have the less allergens will stay in the home. For the carpeted rooms vacuum often with a HEPA equipped vacuum cleaner. Air cleaners can make a really big difference in the severity and frequency of allergy attacks.

Even though your dog allergy is probably not caused by his skin or hair be sure to bathe the dog at least once or twice per week. This removes allergens that are clinging to his skin and fur. Keeping your home scrupulously clean is also imperative when you have a dog allergy. Steam clean your carpets once or twice per year. Most vacuums will blow the smaller particles of dust back into the air through the exhaust so you will need to get a vacuum that has some type of HEPA filter that traps microscopic particles of dust from being blown back into the air.

Dust all your furniture and surfaces several times per week with a damp cloth a dry cloth only spreads dust around rather than actually getting rid of it and don’t forget to regularly clean window blinds and curtains as well.

If none of these things help and you don’t want to get rid of your dog talk to your doctor. He or she can recommend options to treat your dog allergy with medications and other options. You may also get regular shots which help your immune system to build up a tolerance for the dog as well.

Of course for a severe dog allergy you may just need to part with your pet. Being able to breathe is of course much more important than any family pet.

Always consult your doctor before using this information.

The Myth Of Terminal Curiosity And Cats

The Myth Of Terminal Curiosity And Cats

Curiosity killed that cat? I think they got it wrong. We’ve been laboring under the stifling perhaps even deadly weight of a botched adage. The ‘osity’ responsible for the feline fatality had to be of a ‘serious’ not a ‘curious’ nature. The suffix “osis” according to my New American Webster Handy College Dictionary means “an abnormal condition of.” The difference between “osis” and “osity” literally “is” “ity”. “ity” along with its partner in crime “bity” amount to nothing significant. So I will use “osis” and “osity” interchangeably.

‘Curiosity’ then is an abnormal condition of being curious and is liable to expose you to the risks of a few bruised extremities and egos a few startled looks of surprise but an evergrowing knowledge of the world around you. A mild state of curiosity might just spice up your life a trifle. A rampant case of curiosity may batter and bruise but the main risks are of a life of adventure and a chronic smile. The curious cat is the cat that knows or will discover whereof he purrs. His brain cells are always on the move and his life is comparatively rich and mouse laden.

“Seriousity” on the other paw is the weighty and grave state of grimaced jaws humorless eyes and ‘tail dragging through the litter box’ anxiety. It is the abnormal state of being serious. The mildly serious cat merely spends too much time looking behind to see what’s following him frequently just his tail. Often quick to startle this tremulous tabby is often referred to as a ‘fraidy cat’. Even mild ‘seriousity’ if chronic may result in ruined digestion a less than satisfying social life fewer rubs under the whiskers and troublesome hairballs.

A rampant case of ‘serious’ particularly the condition that is left when you take yourself too seriously may involve a batter just like curiosity. However the next step isn’t likely to be curiosity’s mild bruising accompanied by learning but a deepfat frying often accompanied by a devouring. Too much ‘serious’ tends to reduce our mental agility. A real serious cat is much more likely to limp away from a 10 foot drop than spryly walk away like his relaxedly curious cousin. Sufficiently serious and the cat will bounce away from the fall exhibiting the stock market phenomenon known as the ‘dead cat bounce’ i.e. even a dead cat will bounce if it falls far enough.

So how do we switch from serious to curious and save the cat? My prescription begins like this start with a good stretch followed by a hearty laugh. Cats are great models for this mind freeing stretch. Watch a cat stretch. They seem to be able to employ every muscle. Stretching releases muscular tensions increases circulation and feels incredible. So stretch and try to involve every muscle you’ve got. Then laugh. Nothing blows through a morbidly serious mental cloud faster than the warm breeze of a good hearty laugh. If you can’t jump right into a good laugh start with a smile graduate into a chuckle and finally let yourself go and laugh with your whole body. Force yourself into the smile to laugh progression even though you may not feel like it. Pretend that you do. Follow the phony laugh with a good stretch and laugh again. I promise by the third time you follow this recipe of stretching and laughing you’ll be feeling like you’ve dipped into the catnip and you’ll be ready to chase a canary.

Now that you’re feeling good it’s time to get curious. Start seriously asking yourself nonserious questionslike “…exactly how good can I feel?” and “…what opportunities are out there for me today?” Train your brain to be curious not serious.

If you just can’t let the cat out of the serious bag on your own you might want to explore the possibility of using hypnosis to help you with the ‘debagging’. A hypnotist has tools to help release long standing stress and reduce the production of ‘seriousity’. A hypnotist can also help retune your mind to curiosity and help prevent another morbid cat catastrophe.
