Self Defence 5: Protect Yourself And Your Dog
Self Defence 5: Protect Yourself And Your Dog
We read so much about pet owners being attacked raped and murdered when walking their dog in the park or wherever..
Now rightly or wrongly I consider my first duty is to Tyson my dog.
1. I make sure his collar is such that I can slide it off in an instant freeing him and making it difficult for my attacker mugger or wouldbe rapist to catch hold and hurt him.
2. He is trained to “Bark” on command to draw attention if we are trouble. The last thing an attacker wants is publicity: so the more noise the better. Every time I walk him I train him with small dog biscuits to bark instantly and loudly. He doesn’t need to bite just bark. I don’t want him stabbed.
Being very worlduntrusting I always have some means of protecting him and myself! in the event of being under threat.
3. Firstly his lead has a fairly heavy clasp such that it can be slashed through an attacker’s face or eye. At the first sign of danger release your dog and wrap the lead around your hand with the clasp hanging down for about 30 inches just behind your buttock. As he closes slash the clasp through his face and slash back again most rapidly and violently causing him some inconvenience! This is somewhat similar to the martial art manrikigusarijutsu using a chain in self defence.
4. But personally I always have a second effective weapon with me a six inch long dog’s chew tucked in my belt. The martial arts system yawarajutsu uses a short stick to stab into eyes mouth hand or wherever. This hard chew makes for an excellent yawarastick. Most effective and perfectly legal! You cannot be accused by the wouldbe rapist that you used a martial arts weapon to beat him up! Although you actually have!
5. But above all Be Aware! Don’t be where Danger might be! Always carry that long strong dog chew!
Survive!

Pet Friendly Design – Solving Interior Design Problems For Dog
Pet Friendly Design – Solving Interior Design Problems For Dog Owners
Being a pet owner can be put a damper on design plans. There are three basic principals dog owners have come to accept: white furniture is out of the question hardwood is too easy to scratch and the most expensive piece of plush furniture will ultimately be the favored resting place of your canine companion. Theres a wealth of design issues to wrap a tail around that could leave any dog and his masters mind spinning. Whether youre a new dog owner or experienced with the frustrations of doggie design Darlene White of Simplicity Home Staging Design offers design ideas that will keep owners stylish and their dogs still presuming they are master of their domain.
Stylish Sofas:
While its easy to say a dogs place is not on the furniture trying to teach him to stay off of something that is absolute heaven to the fur is another story. Gone are the days of worn sofas embedded with the frayed image of Fidos body in the cushion. New advances in sofa design allow pet owners comfort and style. Crypton is a nearly indestructible synthetic fabric that’s resistant to stains. Its perfect for muddy paws and the dirt and grime doggie fur can leave behind. For a less expensive alternative try an ultra suede microfiber which is smooth to the touch and often sheds stains with the brush of a hand. If purchasing a new sofa is not in the design plans try a sofa cover with ScotchGuard. These covers are stylish and come in an array of colors and designs. Sofa covers now come in stretch fabrics that make it difficult to tell the sofa has been covered. To keep the sofa fabric underneath from discoloring or fraying place an old sheet under the cover. It will act as a barrier to protect the sofa underneath. Two fabrics to avoid: velvet and leather. A dogs fur will cling to velvet and make it extremely difficult to remove the hair. While some owners presume leather is a good choice for dogs its actually quite delicate to the nails and tasty to the tummy. Theres a reason Fido finds those expensive leather shoes delectable the smell. The same is true for a leather sofa. A general rule of thumb for pet owners be weary of furniture that produces a scent.
Stylish Floors:
Carpeting gets dirty hardwood gets scratched and for pet owners flooring options gets limited. Unfortunately flooring choices seem to depend on the pup. If the warm comfort of carpeting is a necessity try FLOR carpet tiles. These 19.7 x 19.7 tiles join together to make a full carpet or area rugs. With a multitude of styles an owner can mix and match designs to create a custom look or select a simple traditional design. FLOR has even teemed with Martha Stewart to offer a larger variety of stylish selections. Easy to clean if a dog soils an area just pull it up follow the simple cleaning instructions allow it to dry and return it to the floor. If hardwood is an absolute must have stick to the harder woods which are more durable and scratch resistant: oak cherry maple hickory elm balsa mahogany and sycamore. Softer woods such as birch cedar pine redwood fir and larch will dent and scratch more easily. According to Bella Wood small scratches can be repaired by purchasing a kit but larger scratches will require light sanding and a new coat of varnish. While some owners have had success with laminate surfaces which comes in a variety of hardwood tile and slate laminate can also scratch. Some dogs also have a difficult time walking on laminate floors. Armstrong has also relased a new vinyl which looks like hardwood. It’s not only stylish but provides easy cleanup and scratch resistance. The best solution for stylish floors: stained concrete tile or slate. Mix and match these surfaces with carpet tiles and never worry about soiled and scratched surfaces again.
Stylish Furnishings:
Compromising furniture is a thing of the past. While metal and glass will withstand the jowls of any pup wood is not out of the question. When selecting furniture and accessories consider the age of a dog. Puppies will be more prone to gnaw on woods and its probably best to avoid wood furniture until a pup is through his terrible twos. If eliminating wood furnishings is not an option consider crating Fido while no one is around to supervise. Chew toys and regular exercise also keeps a dog at peace and less likely to destroy his owners home. Installing an invisible fence inside the home allows owners to keep dogs out of a room without doors or baby gates.
Stylish Accessories:
Because dogs are like children its important to be sure theres nothing within Fidos reach that can be hazardous to his health. Place accessories high enough that a dog cannot reach them. Pieces that are lower to the floor should be larger in scale. As a general rule of thumb an accessory should be two to three times the size of what a dog can swallow. Antiques precious family heirlooms and expensive pieces should be kept out of a dogs reach. Consider getting on all fours and crawling around the room. Look at the room from the perspective of your pet to see what they see and what may be of potential interest. Large breed dog owners should come up to a kneeling position and determine what a dog can get into at this height. Then plan your accessory placement accordingly.
Stylish Walls:
Teach Fido not to jump early. Scratches and dents in walls can be difficult to repair. Flat paint will be nearly impossible to clean. Consider painting in a satin eggshell or semigloss which is the easiest to wipe up.
Doggie Design is within an owners reach. Practicality and function can blend seamlessly with personal taste the owners and the dogs. With so many choices available theres no reason for owners to feel they are living in a dog house. Stylish sofas fabulous floors and fine furnishings will make Fido and family the envy of the neighborhood.

Many Animals Die In The Name Of Beauty
Many Animals Die In The Name Of Beauty
Many animals suffer and die needlessly in the name of beauty to ensure that Botox injections used by millions of men and women worldwide are safe.
This sad fact was uncovered by the Humane Society of the United States HSUS that urged the public to avoid Botox for cosmetic purposes until its manufacturer Allergan stops testing the product on animals.
“The HSUS acknowledges that Botox has several medical uses that are beneficial to humans and those uses should continue. But we are also aware that nearly half of the drug is for beauty enhancement. Consumers need to know that animals are suffering and enduring horrible deaths for the sole satisfaction of human vanity. This has simply got to stop” said Dr. Martin Stephens vice president for the HSUS’s Animal Research Issues.
Botox is the brand name of the botulinum toxin type A a powerful poison that paralyzes muscles and temporarily smooths out wrinkles when used in small amounts. Since it was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for that purpose in 2002 Botox has become a highly popular nonsurgical procedure to remove frown lines crows feet and creases in the forehead.
In 2005 more than 3.2 million Botox treatments were performed according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. In 2003 alone Allergan earned 226 million in net sales from Botox injections.
But theres a dark side to all of this. Before Botox is released to doctors it has to be tested for the right potency. This is carried out by a questionable test known as LD50 or Lethal Dose 50 that kills 50 percent of animals in the process. About a hundred mice are used in the test although Allergan claims it has reduced this number.
This test involves giving mice a single injection of the product into their abdominal cavity and seeing if animals die within 34 days. The mice are first assigned to one of various groups; each group will receive a different strength of the product in order to estimate the strength that kills half of the targeted group. That strength the LD50 value is then considered a single unit of Botox; from there Allergan packages a given number of units into a vial for human use the HSUS explained.
Of all the tests done on animals the conventional or classical LD50 is one of the most brutal. In Botox testing animals endure differing levels of muscular paralysis and suffer from impaired vision and dry mouth. Animals that die do so from suffocation after their diaphragms become paralyzed and they can no longer breathe. Those who don’t die immediately may languish with varying degrees of paralysis before being euthanized at the end of the three to fourday test the HSUS said.
Furthermore studies have shown that the LD50 test is unreliable and as early as 2002 the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development an international trade organization that produces testing guidelines stopped recommending this test. Sadly Allergan continues to ignore this recommendation resulting in the deaths of many lab animals.
To prevent these cruel deaths HSUS is encouraging people to stop using Botox for cosmetic purposes. To support their campaign turn to other Botox alternatives like Dermaxin. This powerful cream can give you a natural facelift that is comparable to cosmetic injections. For details go to http://www.dermaxin.com.

It Is Better To Adopt A Pet Than To Buy
It Is Better To Adopt A Pet Than To Buy A Dog
A lot of people think that adopting a pet is a big hassle. Most people that I know believe that if you decide to adopt a pet you will have to deal with all kinds of behavioral troubles. Adopting a dog or a cat they say is the surest way to have unnecessary trouble. Although this is true about some adoption rescue pets it is not true about all of them. Some of them have been severely abused or mistreated but others are perfectly healthy happy pets who need a home. The decision to adopt a pet can be one of the most rewarding ones that you can make. I guarantee that you will not regret it.
I first decided to adopt a pet dog about six months to go. I had thought about buying a new dog from an animal breeder but one of my friends told me that this was a bad idea. If you buy purebred dogs after all you can run into all kinds of genetic problems. You see dogs from pure breeds tend to be severely inbred. This can cause major health concerns later in life. When I decided to adopt a boxer puppy I knew that I was not going to get a purebred dog. Nonetheless I loved her. I was happy to adopt a pet because I knew that she needed help. The pure breed dogs will always be able to find someone to own them but the ones up for adoption do not have this chance.
Sometimes when you adopt a pet you are literally saving it from death. After all the animal shelters can only hold so many dogs cats rabbits and other animals for so long. After that they have to be put to death. When you adopt a pet it is one less animal that will have to be given an injection. In my opinion this is a great humanitarian act.
I don’t understand how people can justify buying a dog or cat when there are so many out there that need to be adopted. To me it just does not make sense. It only encourages the further breeding of pets which in turn leads to more unwanted animals. When you adopt a pet you do a little bit to save one animal from this vicious cycle. I hope this has convinced you to adopt pets but if it hasn’t I understand. Owning a pet isn’t for everyone.

Inconsistent Views Towards Animal Rights
Inconsistent Views Towards Animal Rights
Among other reasons I became a vegan because I cannot justify needlessly killing an animal. If I needed to kill and eat animals to survive I would. However we do no longer need to kill animals to survive. A person can just as easily survive without eating meat while remaining just as healthy.
In fact we have the technology to essentially create meat without killing animals considering how simple of a substance meat is. We recreate meat in the form of meat substitutes such as soy burgers.
Despite their ability to live easily without killing animals for food many people still choose to eat meat. These people do not grant animals the right to life. If a person murdered another person and then ate that other person almost all people would adamantly oppose it. Meanwhile these same people slaughter animals without giving it a second thought.
It is hard to understand why murdering a human is so objectionable while murdering an animal is not. Most of us vegans and animal rights supporters view that as very inconsistent.
The inconsistency of people’s views towards animal rights goes further though. While people carelessly murder animals because they like the taste of meat and the look of leather these same people fall heads over heels about “cuter” animals. For example pigs are generally smarter than dogs but many people object to the idea of needlessly murdering and eating a dog.
People look at Michael Vick like he is a monster for organizing dog fights which is utterly hypocritical and inconsistent. Fighting dogs probably do not suffer any more than factoryfarmed chickens who are debeaked stuffed into an overpacked cage and eventually slaughtered. Why do people think it is fine to make animals suffer for the enjoyment of leather or the taste of a meaty burger but not for the entertainment of a dog fight?
Of course many people have inconsistent views when it even comes to entertainment and animal rights. Having dogs fight or cock fights for entertainment is seen as wrong and often made illegal but hunting for entertainment is a common pastime.
Some may try to excuse the inconsistency by saying that killing is not as horrible as making the animal suffer while staying alive. However there is still more inconsistency here. Why then do they not have a problem with animal testing? Animal testers carelessly torture animals with unsafe and dangerous products to make perfumes and other needless products. If needlessly torturing animals for petty pleasures is so objectionable to these people it is inconsistent for them to buy beauty products that have been tested on animals.
Simply put most people base their views regarding animal rights on emotions rather than on rationality which results in irrational inconsistencies. Many people do not want to reconsider their inconsistent views regarding animal rights because that would likely lead to giving up meat leather and other animal products.

How To Detect And Treat Dog Allergies
How To Detect And Treat Dog Allergies
The first problem with allergies is that sometimes they are hard to detect especially in the early stages. That’s because if there are no behavioral symptoms then dog owners can only rely on visible physical symptoms to detect any allergies that the dogs might have.
One good way to detect any signs of allergy early is to regularly inspect the dogs for any signs of allergies such as flaking skin sore skin excessive losing of fur and so on. Such inspections can take place any time. For example inspect the dog after play time during a bath or when you get back from work. The key message here is it definitely helps to pay close attention to the physical condition of the dogs.
Sometimes dogs may give out behavioral signals that they are suffering from some form of allergies. They may manifest more irritable or aggressive behavior or they may scratch a particular area excessively. A sharp dog owner will immediately recognize these signals as something out of the ordinary and investigate further. Should allergies be suspected seek professional help immediately to verify that it is indeed an allergy so that the affected dog can be treated as soon as possible.
But detecting dog allergies is just the beginning of the problem. The most difficult part of the problem lies in accurately diagnosing the cause of the allergy. Like most allergies dog allergies can be caused by a wide variety of factors such as exposure to an excessively unhygienic environment bitten by an insect food plants and so on. It’s actually very difficult for vets to come to an accurate diagnosis without the help of the dog owner. After all the dog owner is the one who spends the most time with the dog and knows where the dog has been what it has done recently and what it has eaten. So be sure to furnish such important information to the vet when seeking medical help. Such information will surely help to narrow the scope of the cause of the allergies and the vet will be in a better position to treat the allergies.
For instance if food allergy is suspected you may be advised to stop using the same brand of food or to stop the current diet completely and change to a new one. In such a situation it may take a few weeks to determine if the allergies are really caused by the current diet. If the allergies go away after the diet is changed then the food may be the cause of the allergies. If not you may have to revisit the vet again and let him or her know that it doesn’t help.
Finally remember that sometimes allergies can be very difficult to diagnose and therefore time consuming to treat. So give your vet and yourself more time to deal with the allergies and above all shower lots of love and attention on your dog. You dog will have a much better chance of recovering from the allergies quicker.

How To Deal With A Dog Mouth Health Problem
How To Deal With A Dog Mouth Health Problem
Just like us dogs can develop tooth disease; making it very important to make sure that you care for your pet’s health by keeping their teeth clean and tartar free.
Dogs can get many of the same tooth gum and mouth diseases as we can and since your dog can’t tell you if they have a toothache pet owners have to make sure to take care of their dog’s teeth. Left alone a tooth infection can lead to more serious problems with their vital organs.
You dog’s diet has a real impact on their dental health. Dog food and treats which are fortified and made specifically to keep your dogs’ teeth in good shape are a healthy choice for your pet. While you can have your dogs’ teeth cleaned by your vet this is very expensive and since your dog must be anesthetized for this to be done can actually be dangerous for your pet! Professional cleaning should only be done in extreme cases.
Even if your dog is no longer a puppy you can train them to accept having their teeth brushed with some patience and perseverance. Both dogs and puppies alike can be acclimated to having the toothbrush in their mouths simply by starting out using your finger and a dab of peanut butter.
Your dog will lick your finger this will let you start rubbing their teeth and gums. Be sure to offer plenty of praise while you do this. Soon your dog will be used to this and you can move on to a finger wrapped in gauze. Rub the teeth and gums in a circular motion just as you would with a toothbrush. When your pet becomes accustomed to this you’re ready to move in to the real thing.
You should not use toothpaste which is made for humans as this will cause your dog to have an upset stomach. There is toothpaste designed for dogs which have a taste and smell which appeal to your pet. Let your dog lick a little off of the brush and then add more and start brushing.
Lift the sides of your dog’s gums so you can access their upper teeth aptly called the canines and hold the toothbrush at a 45 degree angle for the best results. This allows you to clean the gum line as well as the teeth to keep the gums equally as healthy. Brushing two to three teeth at a time brush in a circular motion anywhere from eight to ten times or so in order to get each area clean. A dog’s upper back teeth tend to be the most susceptible to decay and periodontal disease so if anything focus your efforts there first.
Make dog teeth cleaning a happy occasion for your dog. Keep low key to prevent your dog from getting too excited to hold still. You should only need abut a minute to get your dogs’ teeth clean and make sure that they stay healthy and happy.About the writer: Dog teeth cleaning is imperative to dog health and canine teeth cleaning can be done in a number of ways. Keep your dog’s teeth clean by brushing your dog’s teeth by a healthy diet and by adding a canine teeth cleaning agent to your dog’s drinking water. All can play a part in keeping your dog’s teeth healthy.
How To Choose Dog Fleece Beds
How To Choose Dog Fleece Beds
A dog’s sleeping habit will determine the model of dog fleece beds you choose for them. When you have a dog you will notice that some of our best friends enjoy curling while others will be fine with stretching out to relax their muscles.
Getting fleece beds for dogs will require that you consider the personality of your pooch. This is because you want only the best for your pet. For example if your dog does not like confinements you should not go for beds that may feel clusterphobic. Another vital factor you should consider is when you are traveling.
As a passionate dog owner you will be concerned about temperature changes. Therefore for very cold seasons you will have to consider a bed that will deliver warmth. Fleece beds will definitely be the answer to your concerns. Get to know more about these beds so that you do not miss out on what they have to offer.
A round ball like bed will be very suitable for dogs who like sleeping curled. Usually such dogs will be much smaller dogs. Large dogs treasure a big and comfortable space. You can therefore get them mattress like dog fleece beds because they are more suited with them.
There are dogs who like sleeping outside and you must search for the appropriate dog fleece beds so that they can be comfortable. Nests will be ideal for them. Since they like to cuddle down the bed will allow them to maintain a controlled balance of temperature. Despite their outdoor disposition they will be comfortable.
When you are traveling you will require dog fleece beds that are easy to roll thin and occupy a limited space. This is because there is very limited space and you might encounter storage difficulties.
It is vital to know the size of bed you need to buy for your dog. The only way to know this accurately is to measure your dog. Some people just estimate with their eyes but you need to take this process to another level. Measure your dog from head to tail then add a little extra space. This way you know you are going to get a good size.
From the range of fleece beds available you will be faced with a difficult task of choosing. You can either go for the luxury bed or the economic one. The main factors that are going to influence your decision are;
* Your personal preference
* The cost
Therefore choose the best bed and give your dog that comfort that can only come from a warm bed. It is probably good to know that whichever design you choose your dog will not complain. For this reason you are not too keen on this. However you will choose a design that pleases you or the particular dog owner.
Another thing you do not have to worry about when choosing is the color of dog fleece beds. However some dogs have been reported to prefer certain colors over others. You might need to take more time to choose the color if you have a very smart dog.
It is probably wise to base the color on your house decor so that you bring out harmony created only by matching colors.
